Bordering the turquoise Adriatic, with only the sea and nearby islands in view, the gardens at LOPUD 1483 are alive with Mediterranean greenery, fragrant herbs, and native wildlife. Winding paths and sunlit terraces offer a tranquil escape, scented with citrus and aromatic plants. At its heart lies the Sacred Garden, a spiritual retreat between the monastery and fortress, where sacred geometry and nine meditation stations invite guests to reflect, connect, and heal.
The Franciscan Legacy
Founded in 1483, the Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of the Cave has stood as a guardian of Lopud Island’s history and culture. For centuries, its sacred halls have welcomed moments of reflection, artistic expression, and community gatherings—remaining true to the spirit of Saint Francis.
A Vision Revived
<p>When Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza first encountered the monastery, its walls echoed with the weight of centuries past. Guided by a profound respect for its history, the restoration became a passion project. Working alongside the Arhitektri studio, every decision was made to preserve the monastery’s original essence while reimagining it as a contemporary sanctuary.</p>
Blending Past with Present
<p>Restoring a structure of this magnitude required patience, creativity, and dedication. Architect Rujana Bergam Marković crafted spaces where history and modernity coexist. Furniture by Paola Lenti, inspired by serene simplicity, adds a harmonious touch—blending the old and new into a seamless experience.</p>
